In 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, the Mediterranean League—also known as the Levante-Catalonia League or Valencia-Catalonia League—was played, temporarily replacing the official competition due to the conflict taking place in Spain. This tournament included Valencia CF, FC Barcelona, RCD Espanyol, Levante FC, Gimnástico FC, Girona FC, Granollers SC, and CE Sabadell. FC Barcelona won the competition.
At that time, on April 18, 1937, the first match between Valencia CF and Girona FC at Mestalla was played (the first ever meeting between both clubs had taken place on February 28 of that same year in Montilivi). At Mestalla, Valencia won 2–1, with goals scored by Antonio Aparicio and Amadeo Ibáñez.
